Tips for Parents

Treatment of Children

Specific treatment for your child is determined by a number of factors, including:

  • Your opinion or preference
  • Your child’s age, health status and complete medical history
  • Your child’s tolerance for specific procedures, therapies or medications
  • The severity of your child’s allergy

We will establish an individual treatment plan for your child with a focus on education and symptom prevention. We provide families with helpful tools, such as a written Asthma Management Plan, in the case of asthma, or a written Food Allergy Action Plan, in the case of food allergies. With each family, we carefully review the triggers of allergic reaction, how to decrease exposure to these allergens by modifying the home environment and/or avoiding foods, and how to use medications appropriately.

No matter what your child is allergic to, the most effective way to treat allergies are through avoidance, medications and, if needed, allergy shots. Many of our patients do not require shots if we achieve optimal control with avoidance and medications.
